Koinobori (Carp Windsock)

Koinobori are rooted in Japanese tradition honoring children. Thousands of colorful koi-themed windsocks hang from poles and eves leading up to Children's Day celebrated on May 5. Parents typically display one koinobori for each child.

Koinobori is one of my most labor intensive designs. Folded from a single rectangle, these are folded, then unfolded, then hand-painted, then refolded. Clearly I wasn't thinking very practically, but I could visualize the end-product in my mind and that's what it took to achieve it.

Koinobori can be folded as a two dimensional flat piece that can be framed, or as a three dimensional hanging windsock.

Finished sizes range from 16 inches long x 3-1/2 inches wide to 7 feet long and 30 inches wide.

Optimum size for this piece, imo, is 3-1/2 feet long and 15 inches wide. $350.
